The Most Stunning Trekking Route Ta Nang – Phan Dung in Vietnam

Stretching s across an area of 60 kilometers through 3 provinces namely Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan, The exhilarating route of Ta Nang - Phan Dung seizes the title of the most beautiful trekking route in Vietnam. Furthermore, it is considered the tough but the rewarding journey to trekkers.  It might be the reason why all pack backers have desire of “conquering” this route. However, to make this dream comes true, you must have a good health, good mate, and strong mentality.

Our journey to Vietnam's most forest trekking lasts three days and two nights, beginning at Duc Trong (Lam Dong) and walking down to Phan Thiet. Our very first impression of this trekking route is the “toughness” that the posts on Internet merely mention rough mountain roads stretching over a few kilometers.

Our journey begins with jungle crossing, mountain climbing, and stream passing. We had to climb up and down slopes of 1,100  meters high. It was really valuable and memorable experience to us. You might engage in this amazing activity to find out your endurance and explore the charming nature.

We did make detailed schedule for the 3-day-2-night journey.  In the evening of the first day, we caught a coach from Ho Chi Minh City to Duc Trong and stop at the three – way intersection into Ta Nang. We all got there at around 3 a.m, then, took a short rest and had breakfast at the nearby stir fried noodle restaurant.

At  a.m, we asked the motorbike driver to take us to the rose house located at the entrance of the forest.  The charge is 250,000 VND (12$) / turn/ 2 people. You should not travel by car because of rough roads, so you will have to stop far from the forest entrance. On the way of reaching the destination, you go through several markets and grocery stores, so you can buy noodles, drinking water, milk, mini gas, etc.

At 9 a.m, we got to the entrance of the forest. After gathering, we prepare the foods and drinks that are essential to the journey. Generally, we have to carry a backpack of about 15 kg weighs. At the beginning of the trekking, we went through many low pine forests in which you definitely feel free to grasp nice check – in pictures to enrich your trip. Then, we climbed up to high slopes that costed us a lot of energy and effort at the same time. At noon, we had lunch with bread with canned fish and pate, then take a short break to continue the journey.

In the evening, we camped and grilled chickens that we did prepare for dinner.  It was not rainy that night but the temperature drops fast, so you need bring raincoats and warm clothes with you. Occasionally, we met some local residents cutting firewood and forest guard keeper patrolling. The point was that they were very nice to us. They showed us the shorter route and advised us to come back to save time.

We woke up in the early morning of the next day to watch the striking sunrise, have breakfast, and continue the coming journey. Bear in mind, you should save water for the next stages unless you might face up to a big trouble. As what the forest watchers did tell us last night, we came back to Phan Dung three – way intersection (Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province). At noon, we met another group who showed us the way to the house of Sister Ot to get to the entrance of the forest.

At that time, we didn’t have water anymore while we might trek further 8 kilometers to reach the stream. Honestly, we were all exhausted and quite frustrated. At 4 p.m, we finally got to the streams for drinking water, bathing, etc. There, we met a scout group of students who did not find the way back, so they decided to set up the tent for camp. Actually, that place is a beautiful spot for camping but you should stay away from the edge of the stream to avoid being lost when it gets dark.

When the night was coming, we prepared coffee and tea, sitting together, talking, and resting.

In the morning of the third day, we got up early, had noodle for breakfast, then, tidy up the camp. At that time, both groups decided to trek together to reach the exist of the forest.

At the entrance of the forest, you will see the house sister Ot that serve two ‘specialties” namely energy drink and noodles. After resting for a while, we hired a 16-seat coach to return Ho Chi Minh City. At 9 a.m, we were available at the city and completed our 3 – day – 2 – night trekking journey at the most beautiful trekking route in Vietnam.

Discover Pindaya Cave in the State of Shan

According to ancient legend, the name “Pindaya” is derived from the word “Pinguya” (meaning: to catch the spider). There was once a giant spider to live in the cave. However, that spider was killed by bow by a prince after capturing the princess of that country into the cave. From then, the place was named Pindaya.

Only 100 kilometers from Inle, Pindaya cave is ranked top “must – visit” to foreign tourists, especially those from European countries.

Located in the mountain that is 1,200 meters above sea level, the cave is characterized by hundreds-year-old banyan trees, spreading and covering an enormous space along both sides.

Interestingly, the stunning Pindaya cave looks like a temple from a distance. The path leading to the entrance of the cave is roofed so that visitors do not get wet in rainy days or get burn in hot day. Visiting the inside of the cave, you definitely see a significant number of the gilding and lacquering Buddha statues of various sizes. How amazing!

There is one thing interesting that visitors can travel by the elevator to reach the entrance of the pagoda and need to take off their sandals on the stairs when wandering around the pagoda. The gate of the pagoda definitely captures the attention of tourists by unique design and eye-catching souvenir stalls running along both sides. Legend has it that there are 8,000 Buddha statues in the cave that are built by the donation of Buddhism followers all over the world. Therefore, there is inscription describing the donation of the owner at the bottom of each statue. Stepping onto the cave, you are able to explore the whole cave thanks to luminescent brick – tiled trails that are very safe for visitors and “anti-slip” carpet spreading at the main path. Significantly, if you want to hold panoramic views of the whole cave and thousands of Buddha statues, you might climb up to the peak of the cave.

Reaching the second layer of the cave, you would probably be “overwhelmed” by the airy space and the collection of thousands of the Buddha statues. These statues are alternately arranged with stalactites in the cave. Thus, they contribute to creating the sparkling look that promise to grasp the eyes of visitors right they set foot in. In other words, you might not “take your eyes” off them during your whole trip. In addition, the inside of the cave is also decorated with white lights so that visitors could observe and admire the statues easily. The stalactite connecting the ceiling of the cave to the ground along with the water dropping from that ceiling  accidentially provide tourists with amazing feeling. Moreover, there is also an area to be surrounded by of Buddha statues and a Dhrma Wheel (Dharmachakra, the symbol in Buddhism) in the front, which, according to the local residents people, can bring about good luck if they go around 7 times. The entrance fee to Pindaya cave is US $ 3 per person and more 300 kyats for capturing photos.

It’s worth mentioning that the locals do not burn incense in the cave, they offer fresh flowers instead. As a result, almost businessmen around the pagoda sell souvenirs instead of diverse offerings that are sold in front of the temple in Vietnam.

To meet the growing needs of visitors, the airy and “eyes – catching” restaurants followed traditional offers typical dishes of Myanmar at reasonable prices.

A wonderful day on Tuyen Lam Lake

I did visit the charming Tuyen Lam lake during the memorable vacation with my family. Setting foot in the lake, I was immediately astonished by the mysterious beauty of the lake, so I make full use of time to grasp beautiful moments and scene.

Nestled in the middle of the immense pine forest, spreading across over an area of 360 hectares, 1,000 meters above sea level, 5 kilometers from the city of Dalat, the “mysterious” Tuyen Lam lake is an undoubtedly ideal place for travel, relaxation or even sport activities.

Featuring the tranquil and peaceful scenery, Tuyen Lam lake has magic to “mesmerize” visitors for the first time they get there. The images rolling waves that move gently and rustic boats floating at the middle of the lake surely capture the eyes of tourists when they stroll along the lake sides.

Get there, you should greet the stunning sunset on the small the fishing boat, a poetic painting that you have ever admired at the exhibitions of famous painters. This promise to be one of the unforgettable experiences during your visit to the lake.

There is one thing interesting that the lake is full of water during 6 - month dry season with no rain. Moreover, the surface of the lake is calm, blue, and clear all year round, so it is compared to a giant natural mirror created by the mother nature. Giving the surroundings a look, you definitely “fall in love” with the lush pine forest covering the nearby mountain and hills. Then, all of them blend together together to form a “ breath – taking” peaceful and romantic painting. Give it a try!

Exploring the Charming Pyu Ancient Cities

The Pyu Ancient City is actually the remains of three brick, walled, and moated cities of Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra located in vast irrigated landscapes in the dry zone of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River basin. Pyu had its own language and written script which was derived from Brahmi of ancient India. In terms of culture, Pyu’s culture was heavily influenced by trade with India, importing Buddhism as well as other cultural, architectural and political concepts. Significantly, each of the cities had extensive monastic quarters.

The Pyu Ancient Cities are the common name for the Pyu states that existed in central and northern regions of the modern Myanmar, dating from the 1st century BC to 840 AD. The history of Pyu city - states is discovered by the document and the Chinese records of Pyu states.

The Pyu Ancient Cities provide the earliest testimony of the introduction of Buddhism into Southeast Asia also two thousand years ago and the attendant economic, socia – political and cultural transformations which resulted in the rise of the first, largest, and longest – lived urbanized settlements of the region until the 9th century. The Pyu showed a striking capacity to assimilate Indic influences and swiftly move into a significant degree of re – invention.

The Pyu are one of the ancestors of the Burmese. The Pyu people immigrated into Myanmar around the 1st century BC, but there are records of the time that show that they arrived in Myanmar more earlier. They founded 5 states namely Binnaka, Mongamo, Sri Ksetra, Peikthanomyo, Kutkhaing in the northern region. Additionally, they set up Halin gyo Thanlwin Coastal area in the east and Martaban Bay in the south.

At the early period, the trade route from China to India passed Myanmar. During the year of 97 to 121, the Roman delegation to China followed the road route through Myanmar. However, the Pyu citizens chose another route, they traveled along Ayeyarwaddy river to Shri Ksertra river, and then went along the sea road to the west of to reach India and to the east to get to the islands of Southeast Asia.
According to the preserving Chinese historical document, there are 18 Pyu states, nine of which were walled city, covering 298 districts. The Pyu states are human and peaceful, more importantly, they have a prosperous life and rich culture. Significantly, Pyu states seemed not to deal with war or conflict. Their disputes ( if any) were solved by martial competiton of level playing field and construction contest. Interestingly, they decided to wear clothes made of cotton instead of silk in order not to kill the silkworm.

Regarding the legislation, those that breach the law is fined or suffered imprisonment, or even face the death penalty if they commit a serious offense. The Pyu people worshipped the Buddhism, so all children were educated in the monasteries from the age of 7 until the age of 20. According to historians, although Pyu city – states did not unify into a kingdom, more “dynamic” cities “ruled” the economic and development of the Kingdom and received tributes from the smaller cities. Among them, the most powerful city must be Sri Ksetra.

Of the 18 major cities in China, there were both well - developed and less - developed city, according to Chinese records. So far, scientists have not found out the first city and its time of foundation at the same time. They have just confirmed that the first city was established before the year of 94  because of the milestone indicating the change of the dynasty.

In the 7th century, the Pyu people moved their capital northward Halingyi in the dry region, leaving Shri Ksetra as a secondary commercial center in the south. However, the new capital of the north was invaded by the kingdom in the South at the middle of the 9th century. Thus, that event “triggered” the destruction of the Pyu ancient cities.

The Ancient Pyu Cities are recognized as World cultural heritage site by following criterion:

Criterion (ii): Due to the interaction between indigenous Pyu societies with Indic cultures from the 2nd century BCE, Buddhism achieved its first permanent foothold in Southeast Asia among the Pyu cities, where it was embraced by all classes of society from the ruling elite to agrarian laborers. Marked by imposing memorial stupas and other sophisticated forms of brick ritual structures, the Pyu Ancient Cities provide the earliest evidence of the emergence of these innovative architectural forms in the region, some of which have no known prototypes. The development of Pyu Buddhist urban culture had widespread and enduring impact throughout Southeast Asia, providing stimulus for later state formation after the 5th century CE following the onward transmission of Buddhist teaching and monastic practice into other parts of mainland Southeast Asia.

Criterion (iii): The Pyu Ancient Cities marked the emergence of the first historically-documented Buddhist urban civilization in Southeast Asia. The establishment of literate Buddhist monastic communities arose in tandem with the re-organization of agricultural production, based on expert management of seasonally-scarce water resources and the specialized production of manufactured goods in terracotta, iron, gold, silver and semi-precious stones both for veneration and for trade. Buddhism underpinned the construction of religious monuments in brick through royal and common public patronage, marked by the shift to permanent materials from earlier timber building techniques. The Pyu developed unique mortuary practices using burial urns to store cremated remains in communal funerary structures. Trading networks linked the Pyu ancient cities with commercial centers in Southeast Asia, China and India. Through this network Buddhist missionaries carried their Pali-based teaching into other areas of mainland Southeast Asia.

Criterion (iv): Technological innovations in resource management, agriculture, and manufacturing of brick and iron at the Pyu Ancient Cities created the preconditions leading to significant advances in urban planning and building construction. These innovations resulted in the rise of the three earliest, largest, and most long-lived Buddhist urban settlements in all of Southeast Asia.  The Pyu cities’ urban morphology set a new template of extended urban format characterized by massive gated walls surrounded by moats; a network of roads and canals linking urban space within the walls with extensive areas of extramural development, containing civic amenities, monumental religious structures defined by towering stupas and sacred water bodies. At or near the center of each ancient city was an administrative compound containing the palace marking the cosmic hub of the Pyu political and social universe.

There are three Pyu ancient cities to be recognized the World Cultural Heritages, namely Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra. These are prominent examples of trade, religious organizations, architectures and irrigation systems used in agriculture.

Beikthano

Located in the central region of Myanmar, Beikthano is also known as Vishnu City. The city might be the first capital of a cultural and political state in the history of Myanmar. The city spreads over an area of about 300ha, of which the length is  3000 meters and the width is 1000 meters. It’s worth mentioning that the walled city is surrounded by 6 meters – width wall system. Interestingly, the city has excavated many architectural ruins such as stupas, monasteries, walls, coins, decorative ceramics, cremation remains, etc.

Hanlin

Situated in Mu valley in the central region of Myanmar, Hanlin ancient city is also known as Halingyi. At the same time, the city is one of the largest irrigated areas in Myanmar. Spreading across an area of 664 hectares at the shape of a rectangle. The citadel features 4 main gates and 12 doors and is surrounded by a river or canal.

Sri Ksetra

Nestled to the south of the Pyu Kingdom, Sri Ksetra is also known as Thayekhittaya. The city is thought to be founded in the 7th  or 8th century. Additionally, it might serve as the capital of two or three dynasties, including the Vikrama dynasty, which created the Pyu calendar, which later became the official calendar of Myanmar.

Spreading across an area of about 1400 hectares, surrounded by 4.5 meters - high wall, this ancient city is characterized by 12 entrances and four temples placed at five corners of the citadel. Interestingly,  palaces, monasteries, and houses are located in the southern half of the city. Therefore, the whole of the north captures the attention of tourists by the fields which “’distribute” foods for the whole country when it is surrounded or attacked by the enemy. There is one thing interesting that this route is thought to be the road to India for the purpose of asking for the Buddhist scripture in 648.

Among the ruins, three “’worthy – visiting” tower temples including Bawbawgyi, Payagyi, and Payama.

Additionally, the ruins of the towers, Bebe for instance and stone sculptures related to the Buddhist Hindu are founded here.

The beautiful Linh Quy Phap An Pagoda

Lying in the Bao Lam commune, Lam Dong, Linh Quy Phap An Pagoda (so-called Phap An Son) has been favorably named the “God’s gate” because of its breathtaking beauty at sunrise.

Especially, the number of visitors to the Pagoda increases quickly at the weekend. Even, many of them ask the monks to sleep overnight to see the sunrise the next day.
